An education video series for healthcare professionals to help improve communication, and the techniques required in performing male intimate physical examinations.
This education was developed by Neil Sefton and Professor Richard Turner for the University of Tasmania (2012). Permission was granted for Andrology Australia to use this videos series for medical education purposes only.
GPs come into contact with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander males in a variety of ways, from urban private practice through to corrective services and rural/remote Aboriginal Medical Services. GPs need to be aware that the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander males is influenced by cultural factors which have passed through generations, irrespective of whether the patient is an educated, urban professional through to living in a remote Indigenous community.
This active learning module (ALM) aims to provide knowledge, skills and communication strategies to assist GPs to better engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men in the primary health care setting. The ALM focuses on a range of culturally appropriate strategies for GPs to initiate dialogue and improve the ability of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander male patients to disclose sexual and reproductive health concerns and understand the associations between chronic disease and erectile dysfunction. The ALM attempts to capture strategies to assist GPs wherever they practice, recognising that there will be differences between practices, and therefore GPs are encouraged to apply those elements that are considered relevant and/or appropriate.
GPs who complete all case studies in one ALM will receive a complimentary Andrology Australia orchidometer. (Note: Only one orchidometer per person - restricted to Australian residents only)
